Happy Equinox!
“Spring is here,” says the calendar. But Alaska chimes in and says, “Not yet.”
While the snow flurries and cold maritime temperatures of winter remain, our days lengthen with welcome speed. 10 degrees feels a whole lot different when we have 12 or more hours of daylight! Equanimity is the name of the game this time of year. Gratitude pulses through our veins while appreciating a little window of time perfect for snowshoeing, doing taxes and other paperwork, reading up on the various things we need to learn, following the Iditarod (Tollef’s former all-consuming life), and planning for our next moves as spring kelp harvest and summer salmon season quickly approach.
In this moment of balance in the cozy corner of the season, we hope you enjoy these scenes of our homestead and our humpback whale neighbors from Tollef’s drone (this winter he got an additional pilot’s license rating specifically for this purpose). One of the perks of living remote is bearing witness to Alaskan life right here, despite whatever humans have going on. These beautiful creatures live their sublime life and this is only the tip of the proverbial living iceberg of an ecosystem.
